Subtlehaus is a projection of the wish for a settled life. It stands in a residential quarter of Sakai, Osaka's second city, within walking distance of JR Ōtori Station. The cost of living is roughly half that of the metropolis, yet the area offers convenient daily amenities, high-quality food, a safe and quiet atmosphere, and deep cultural roots.

This house was originally the founder's own refuge. Life is not always easy, but much of its difficulty comes down to choice. Every choice carries its own sacrifice and change, and only by trying do we learn what kind of environment can truly hold us.

We hope this is a place to settle, to sort one's thoughts and generate energy and ideas. Creative work is not only about moving and absorbing; it is about slowly translating those experiences, in a safe and unhurried space, into ideas and stories that are genuinely your own.

Texture in life comes from subtraction, not accumulation

In Japanese spatial philosophy, ma is more than empty space: it is an art of rhythm and of breathing. Every interval that is kept is a form of respect for what exists, and a quiet invitation. When living, working and resting are consciously separated, life gains an inner order — and that order is a gentle form of self-care.

The house carries the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, a compassionate acceptance of imperfection. The more one learns to subtract, the more one understands the relationship between space and self. The essence of living has never been possession, but the blank space that gives time and mind real room.

Daily life as a silent philosophy

In Japan, daily life is not only functional; it is a quiet practice. From streets that never shout to silent mode on the train, from soft-spoken greetings to the body language of a bow, each small gesture carries deep respect for others, for space and for nature.

The way of being Subtlehaus hopes you experience is simply to slow down. You begin to notice the sound of the kettle, the angle of light moving past the window, the texture of tatami underfoot. You are no longer just living — you are in conversation with life.

Founder

I set out from Kaohsiung. In the first class of a cultural and creative industries program, the professor's opening line has stayed with me word for word: "You are not here to graduate as a designer — you are here to become the person who integrates the different professions of this industry." The road since has largely followed that sentence: nearly four years as an assistant at a working artist's side, learning from pigments and brushwork up through graphic design, art education programs, and the planning and delivery of exhibitions at home and abroad; then founding and running LEXPO's international art-fair practice, serving as general manager of a property sales agency through the pandemic, and completing a master's in business management in London to connect years of practice with systematic knowledge.

For the past three years I have rarely slept in the same bed for more than two weeks at a stretch. Different cities, cultures, languages and food, and a constant stream of new pressures — which is exactly why I came to long for a little steadiness in every brief stay.

Subtlehaus is a wish accumulated over those years: a place where creators can live at ease and work with a quiet mind. There is no extravagant decoration here — only a plain, practical way of living in harmony with its surroundings. I once lost my passion in the middle of making; those pressures and turns taught me how deeply restorative it is simply to live in a space where one feels safe and comfortable. That understanding became the proposal I want to share with you: come here, and find your own rhythm.

Relationship with LEXPO and REFLECTION

Subtlehaus is the offline extension of REFLECTION, a brand of Subtlety Limited Co.: a physical space, a lived experience, an embodied cultural practice. It carries forward LEXPO's commitment to connecting artists internationally and grounds REFLECTION's attention to the aesthetics of everyday life, serving as a meeting point between the two and fostering exchange among creators.
